welcome!

Welcome. Here you can find information on various types of flutes and bamboo saxes I make. Most are made of bamboo or Aroundo Donax. They are handmade using techniques traditional in their place of their origin.

Kids' Flutes

Love flute Β

The small sized Native American-style flute, with its finger holes close to each other for easy grip, is ideal for kids age of 6 or older.

It is tuned in B pentatonic scale and it is really easy for anyone to produce sound by just blowing on the top end.

It has only 5 finger holes and the pentatonic scale sounds nice even when you just play random notes, encouraging for children to play and improvise..

Native American Flute - The Love Flute

In love with a beautiful girl but very shy to tell her, a young man is leaving the camp disappointed. One night, in the woods, magical guests offer him a special gift - a love flute. The holes drilled by woodpeckers, carved by the animals of the forest, with it he speaks about his love to the girl where the words have failed.

This is a legend of the Dakota people about the origin of the love flute, a flute usually being used when men invited the girl they loved to share their blanket beside the fire.

This flute is one of the easiest to play as you only need to blow at the top open end to produce a sound. The pentatonic scale sounds good even when you play random notes, making improvisation easier.

I usually make them in G and F pentatonic tuning with 5 finger holes. G fits easily on female hands, as the finger holes are close together.  The F is slightly bigger and comfortable for someone with medium / large hands.

Flutes From Greece

Souravli

Flute of Greek traditional music, it is found on the islands (and in Northern Greece) with various names: : "souravli",  "thiampoli", "bampioli", "padafli", "pinaflika", etc.

It usually has 6 holes in the front and one at the back for the thumb. It is tuned in a diatonic scale. I make them in C major, as it fits with many of the island “Nisiotika” songs or Cretan “Madinades” and it is compact, easy to have it with you in a small bag.

It is also easier to blow as you don’t need a lot of air to produce sound, which makes it also an ideal flute for older people.

I make it  with Aroundo  Donax, and the wooden mouthpiece with oleander or fig tree wood using the traditional materials for this instrument. It is tuned with an electronic tuner for a accuracy during construction. Externally and internally it is treated with shellac for greater resistance to moisture.

Pan flute

Pan was tracking the beautiful nymph Syrinx in his attempt to conquer her, stroke by her beauty. As she was trying to escape him she found herself in front of the river Ladonas. Syrinx begged the river god to save her and he pitied her. At the moment when Pan reached to grab her he found himself, instead of holding the beautiful nymph, holding a bunch of reeds.

As he started to sob disappointed by the disappearance of Syrinx he heard the sounds the reeds made from his heavy breathing. He decided then to tie them together and make a musical instrument and play with it to soothe his pain.

Transverse Flutes

Perhaps the most versatile flutes I make are the transverse flutes, with a range greater than two octaves, depending on the skill of the player and the quality of construction, one can play from jazz to Baroque or oriental music with them.

The flute is the closest relative to the modern flute . I usually make them with G or C major tuning , the latter being a pocket flute .

Shakuhachi

The Shakuhachi is a Japanese flute with a familiar sound as it has been extensively used in cinema music . The instrument is associated with the religious exercise in Japan of the 19th century, and specifically the practices of Fuke Zen meditation. It was used in the exercise of Souizen (Blowing meditation)

Usually made of bamboo, often with the root at one end. The sound is produced by blowing in the open, slanted cut, edge. It is a very versatile instrument with which a skillful player can produce any desirable tonality whithin the range of the instrument.

It is certainly not one of the easiest flutes out there but rewarding for someone who will work to master it with the flexibility and dramatic sound it has to offer.

Bamboo Sax

These instruments are great for someone who wants a pocket saxophone that fits in a small bag. If you, like me, always wanted to learn how to play the saxophone , a bamboo sax is a great place to start before spending a large amount for a decent student saxophone.

A Bamboo Sax is not , in any case, a saxophone replacement. It is a different instrument, simpler to play, with similar to the major flute fingering and a warm saxophone sound that impresses. The mouthpiece that I use is an alto saxophone mouthpiece with a tenor 1.5 reed.
I also make mouthpieces from Aroundo Donax.

The Bamboo Sax has an octave range, 6 holes in the front and one at the back for the thumb.
It is tuned in a major scale and comes in Soprano, Alto and  Tenor versions.

Soprano

The Soprano is tuned in C major. It has a comfortable size for someone with small hands as the holes are close together but it is also comfortable for someone with large hands. It has the highest voice and a 35 cm length (13.5 ")

Alto
The alto is tuned in Bb major and it is comfortable for someone with medium or large hands. For someone with small hands the soprano would be more suitable. It has a length of about
 43 cm (17 ")

Tenor

The tenor is tuned in G major. Good for someone with medium to large hands. Someone with small hands should avoid it. At a length of about 48 cm (19 "), the tenor, has the lowest voice and a deep jazzy tone.
